Choosing the Correct Chainsaw Replacement Chain

When it comes to replacing the chain on your saw, there are many different types of chains and bars available. Depending on the brand and model of your saw, the type of work you intend to do with it, and other factors, you'll need to know how to select the right replacement chain.
Choosing the Correct Chain
First, you'll need to determine the size of the chain that will fit your saw. The best way to do this is to refer to your owner's manual or to the tool's packaging for this information. You'll also need to determine the pitch of your new chain. This is measured by the distance between three rivets on your chain. You'll need a tape measure to determine this measurement, so make sure you have one on hand when you begin.
The length of the chain is another important aspect to consider when purchasing a new replacement chain for your saw. The number of drive lugs on your old chain is a good indicator of how long your new one will be. However, if you are unsure about how to count your drive lugs, there are other methods that will work as well.
Using your chainsaw's owner's manual or a similar resource, you can determine the pitch of your chain. This is the distance between any three rivets on your chain that have heads on them. The resulting measurement is what manufacturers use to estimate the overall length of your chain.
You may also need to measure your bar's guide width and bar length. These measurements are often listed on the side of your bar or in the owner's manual. You'll need a measuring tape or vernier caliper to measure these dimensions, as they are difficult to accurately measure with a regular measuring tape.
Aside from determining the overall length of your chain, you'll also need to determine what gauge it is. This is the thickness of the drive links (the tooth-like undersides that fit in your guide bar). The gauge of your chain is often a good indication of how well it will fit into your bar, and you'll need to purchase a chain with a gauge that is close to the width of your bar.
Full chisel and semi chisel are two of the most common types of chain on the market. These chains have squared, sharply pointed cutters that are able to cut wood aggressively. This style of chain is often considered a professional chain and works well for both cutting rough and soft wood, as it can endure more wear than other types.
Unlike standard chain, full chisel and semi chisel chains have chrome-tipped cutters to keep their edges sharp and resist dirt and debris. This can extend the life of your chain and reduce maintenance needs.
Low profile chain uses shorter cutters than standard chain and is a good choice for cutting with a low-horsepower saw or an electric chainsaw. The result is a thinner cut that removes less wood than standard chain, but it can be faster and easier to cut with. It's also a good choice for pruning or trimming trees in tight spaces because it can be easily adjusted to get the right cut.
